pa|tri|ar|chy «PAY tree AHR kee», noun, plural -chies.
1. a form of social organization in which the father is head of the family and in which descent is reckoned in the male line, the children belonging to the father's clan. The joint family of the Hindus and the Roman family are examples.
2. a family, community, or tribe having this form of organization governed by a patriarch or eldest male.
